Professor Jennifer McElwain is an Associate Professor of UCD's School of Biology and Environmental Science and is a member of UCD's Earth Institute and is Director of the Programme for Experimental Atmospheres and Climate facility at UCD.

In this insightful and thought provoking TEDxUCD talk, Jenny opens with the fact that on May 9th 2013, the carbon dioxide concentration of the atmosphere passed 400 parts per million ( 0.04%) for the first time in approximately 15 million years.

So what is the big deal about this little molecule?

Why does a gas which makes up only 0.04% of the atmosphere get all the press? Why does it drive all the world climate conferences?

In her talk Jenny urge us to strongly consider the future Consequence of what we are currently doing to the earth system.

Professor Jennifer McElwain is a research leader in Earth system science and plant evolution.

Over the past 20 years her research and teaching have focused on the development and use of palaeobiological proxies to understand the evolution of Earth's atmosphere and climate.

Before joining UCD in 2006 Jenny was a curator of fossil plants at the Field Museum of Natural History in Chicago and a post-doctoral researcher at the University of Sheffield, UK

She graduated from Trinity College Dublin with a BA (Botany) in 1993 and from Royal Holloway University of London with a PhD in 1997.
