Hi I’m Max and today we’re going to talk about the difference between relief valves and safety valves.

In the process industry, these two terms are used interchangeably although they differ in their operation. They both prevent overpressure in systems, but differ in how they achieve this and implementation.

A relief valve is a device that lowers the pressure to prevent damage to the system. Their function is to protect pressure sensitive equipment from damage caused by overpressure. For example, a relief valve can prevent that a pump is running against a closed valve. Often, systems actively continue their operation with the relief valve slightly open.

Safety valves on the other hand, are seen as a last resort safety measure to protect property, the environment, and foremost people.

They also differ in operation. The opening of relief valves is gradual and proportional to the pressure increase after the set opening point. The closing of the valve also happens gradually. Safety valves will pop open immediately when the setpoint is reached, usually accompanied by a pop and wooshing sound. They are designed to relieve the system of dangerous overpressure as fast as possible. For example to prevent pressure explosions.

In summary, a pressure relief valve is used to relieve normal overpressure in a system and prevent damage to components and a safety valve is used as a last resort to avoid, for example, pressure explosions.

To select the right safety or relief valve for your application it is important to take the material properties into account. Both types of valves are available in brass and stainless steel. Brass is suitable for most media but is not resistant to corrosive media. Stainless steel is more suitable for these types of media as it is more resistant and it can withstand higher pressure and temperature ranges.

Additionally, it is important to select the right blow-off capacity for your applications. The blow-off capacity is the rate at which the excess pressure can be released.
