Denmark were ahead by five goals after 54 minutes, but played 27-27 with Norway in a sold-out Royal Arena.
Denmark's handball men opened the Golden League event at home on Thursday with a 27-27 draw against Norway.
In a sold-out Royal Arena with 12,436 spectators, Nikolaj Jacobsen's troops delivered 24 powerful minutes in the second half, after the effort before the break had been more lukewarm.
However, the last six minutes of the match were disastrous and Norway turned around 21-26 to 27-27 in the match, the first of three before the EC in Germany starts next week.
In its next match at the Golden League meeting, Denmark will meet Egypt on Saturday afternoon in an equally sold-out Royal Arena. On Thursday, the Egyptians beat the fourth team in the tournament, the Netherlands, with 30-28.
Denmark meet the Dutch on Sunday afternoon, but move to Odense at that time.
Without it being decidedly bad, no part of the Danish game was really in the closet in the first half, which opened a bit messy and with several technical errors.
Denmark took a 5-3 lead, but Norway had the best of their attacking game and several times managed to get around the slightly too lethargic Danish defense or punished the hosts in the counter phase.
The star Sander Sagosen, among others, took advantage of this, but especially also the GOG wing Alexander Blonz, who found his way past Niklas Landin and Emil Nielsen as many as seven times in the first 30 minutes.
Norway led 15-13 at the break, but it quickly became 17-16 in Denmark's favor at the start of the second half. It was due both to increased sharpness at both ends, but also to Emil Nielsen, who was only briefly in before the break.
The Barcelona keeper thus completely shut down for almost five minutes and with six saves was a major contributor to Denmark winning the first quarter after the restart with 9-3.
The very uplifting trends continued, and Norway seemed dejected to be snubbed after their otherwise fine first half.
Gidsel contributed with six goals in the match, but also assists and kicking actions that forced Norway to commit free throws. Mikkel Hansen converted a number of them with certainty, and the Aalborg veteran also ended up on six hits.
Denmark cruised towards victory, but suddenly it all fell apart.
Technical errors and blunders led to five Danish attacks without yield, and then Norway picked up five goals in a flash, and only Magnus Landin's redemptive strike to make it 27-26 a minute before time prevented the first defeat in 19 games.
On Thursday next week, Denmark opens its EC when the Czech Republic awaits in the first group match in Munich. Since then, it applies to Greece and Portugal in the same place. The two best teams in the group advance to the middle group.
