Spider-Man and Venom: Maximum Carnage (SNES) Playthrough - NintendoComplete

A playthrough of LJN's 1994 license-based beat 'em up game for the Super Nintendo, Spider-Man and Venom: Maximum Carnage.

When this first came out, I remember how good it looked in screenshots in all of the magazine reviews. Between the comic panel scenes and the game's character designs, it looked like it was dead-on with the source material. Add in Final Fight-type gameplay, branching paths, a soundtrack by Green Jelly (not that I cared much about GJ, but the music being done by a real band that I had heard of was really cool), and it all seemed like the recipe for a perfect game.

Does anyone else remember the bright red cartridge this came on? I loved that!

Of course it didn't live up to such an impossible expectation, but it was pretty excellent anyway. I certainly wasn't disappointed. Even now the graphics still look really good, and the music still suits it to a T (even if it is still fairly generic sounding rock). And have you ever noticed the (unauthorized) use of Black Sabbath's The Mob Rules?

The controls weren't quite a match for Final Fight or Streets of Rage 2, but you have quite a few more moves at your disposal because of your webbing: grab 2 guys and smash them together, swing over their heads, create a makeshift shield - all are possible with the right finger gymnastics. You also get to call in other superheroes to help you out, which I always thought was super-cool. It doesn't control particularly well, but it's not too frustrating once you get the hang of it.

I tried to hit all of the secret rooms on the path I took, but man, they really didn't make it easy to access them, even if you knew where they are!

So is Spider-Man and Venom: Maximum Carnage worth a play? Damn right it is!
