Amazing Walkative friends, Welcome back!

Let me take you to a breathtaking tour of the Basilica of St. John Lateran (Basilica di San Giovanni in Laterano) in Rome today, captured in stunning 4K 60fps for a crisp, incredibile experience. This is Rome’s oldest basilica and the official cathedral of the Pope, often called the “Mother of All Churches.”

Built in the 4th century by Emperor Constantine, St. John Lateran is a masterpiece of art, history, and architecture. Its grand entrance, the Holy Door (Porta Santa), is opened during Jubilee years and symbolizes the path to salvation.

Now that you have a general overview lets do some highlights of the Basilica:

00:00 Introduction

01:00 The Lateran Obelisk, standing in the piazza outside, is the tallest ancient Egyptian obelisk in the world, brought to Rome in 357 AD.

02:56 Entering Basilica di San Giovanni Laterano

07:08 Inside, you’ll find the stunning marble statues of the 12 apostles, each over 4 meters tall, lining the central nave.

The Cloister of St. John Lateran, a quiet and serene area, features intricate columns and is one of the finest examples of Romanesque architecture.

The Magnificent but Very Important Gate:

15:00 The basilica’s monumental Lateran Gate (Porta Lateranensis) once marked the entrance to the Lateran Palace, the ancient residence of popes. This gate is a symbol of St. John Lateran’s historical importance as the first papal residence before the Vatican.

15:45 The cosmatesque flooring, a unique mosaic style used in medieval Rome, adds a historic and artistic touch to the interior.

The Holy Stairs (Santa Scala):

26:30 Located just across the piazza from the basilica, the Santa Scala (Holy Stairs) is one of the most sacred sites in Christianity. I tried to enter with my camera📷 but unfortunately recording or taking any picture was prohibited inside, by the way tradition holds that these 28 marble steps were brought to Rome from Jerusalem by St. Helena, the mother of Emperor Constantine. They are believed to be the stairs that Jesus climbed during his trial before Pontius Pilate. Today, pilgrims ascend the stairs on their knees in an act of devotion and penance. The Santa Scala is housed in a special building, the Sanctuary of the Holy Stairs, which also contains exquisite frescoes depicting scenes from the Bible.
