Welcome to Lagoa das Patas, or the Pond of Ducks, one of the most peaceful and charming spots on the island of Terceira, in the Azores.
This small municipal park lies in the parish of Terra Chã, within the municipality of Angra do Heroísmo, right at the base of Serra de Santa Bárbara, the island’s highest mountain.

Lagoa das Patas sits at an elevation of around 600 meters above sea level, where the air is cooler and fresher — usually about 3 to 4 degrees Celsius lower than down by the coast in Angra. The difference is noticeable the moment you step out of the car — a soft mist in the trees, and the scent of cedar all around.

The park covers just a few hectares, a cozy space surrounded by towering Japanese cedars, or Cryptomeria japonica, that thrive in the moist, volcanic soil. Their dense canopy gives this place its quiet, almost magical atmosphere.

In the middle of the park lies the main pond, the lagoa itself — a shallow, tranquil basin that collects mountain runoff and rainwater. Over the years, locals have released goldfish here, and now they shimmer just beneath the surface. Ducks and even a few wild chickens wander freely through the grass and picnic areas, perfectly at home among the visitors.

Families and hikers often stop here to rest or have a snack at the stone picnic benches and wooden tables scattered beneath the trees. It’s a favorite pause point for island tours and day drives up toward Santa Bárbara or the interior trails.

Lagoa das Patas isn’t large — you can walk around it in just a few minutes — but it’s one of those places that feels timeless. Between the quiet water, the rustle of cedar needles, and the sound of ducks in the background, it captures the calm and simple beauty that makes Terceira so unforgettable.
