You may go back to the 1960s to see the beginnings of Earth Day. The US Public Health Service and Morton Hilbert jointly convened the Human Ecology Symposium in 1968. Hilbert and numerous other individuals worked for the next two years to plan the first Earth Day, which happened in 1970 in April. Earlier that year, a similar festival had also been planned. John McConnell, an activist, assisted in planning a day to celebrate the Earth and the idea of peace on March 21, 1970. (this date was selected to coincide with the first day of spring). Earth Day was only observed once every ten years at first. By 1990, more than 200 million individuals from 141 different countries had joined in on Earth Day, making it a truly global celebration. After the 1990 Earth Day was a success, it was determined that Earth Day should be celebrated annually. The commemoration of Earth Day throughout the decade helped to concentrate attention on environmental issues like the necessity of recycling, climate change, and clean energy.
