What's UNIQUE in Hamilton? TELLING ALEXANDER HAMILTON’S STORY… WITH A DIVERSE CAST… AS A MUSICAL… THAT DRAWS INSPIRATION FROM HIP-HOP AND R&B.

PROMISE CONFLICT: THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION ITSELF PROMISES CONFLICT. ON TOP OF THAT YOU HAVE RELATIONAL CONFLICT AS WELL…

My grad for Hamilton's story CONCEPT: A+

WHEN IT COMES TO CHARACTERS, THREE THINGS ARE INCREDIBLY IMPORTANT:

THEIR WANTS/NEEDS - ESSENTIAL TO US UNDERSTANDING THEM
THEIR HUMANITY - PERFECT CHARACTERS ARE BORING AND LAZY
THEIR ARCS HAVE TO BE BELIEVABLE

THERE ARE A LOT OF DIFFERENT THINGS LIN-MANUEL COULD HAVE GONE WITH A RE-TELLING OF THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION… BUT HE DOES SOMETHING REALLY POWERFUL in Hamilton: HE DOESN’T LET ANY OF THE CHARACTERS OFF-THE-HOOK FOR THEIR REPREHENSIBLE BEHAVIOR…

…AND YET WE SYMPATHIZE, EMPATHIZE, AND LOVE THEM NONETHELESS.

AND TO PULL THAT OFF IN THE IDEOLOGICAL MODERN WORLD IS NEXT TO IMPOSSIBLE. BUT HE DID IT.

CHARACTERS in Hamilton the Musical: A+


WHEN IT COMES TO STORY AND PLOT, THAT’S INCREDIBLY TRICKY WITH HISTORICAL FICTION…

BECAUSE, BY DEFINITION, YOU MUST TAKE LIBERTIES… BUT, CREATIVE LICENSE ONLY GOES SO FAR BEFORE THE STORY BECOMES SO FAKE THAT IT DOESN’T WORK…


HERE, LIN-MANUEL GETS IT RIGHT ONCE AGAIN!

HE SOMEHOW FINDS A WAY TO DRAW A THROUGH-LINE BETWEEN ALL THESE DISPARATE STORIES TO LAND ON A COMPELLING, REMARKABLE STORY.

I DO THINK THAT THE FIRST ACT OF THE FILM IS THE STRONGEST HERE, BUT AGAIN, SINCE IT’S A HISTORICAL DRAMA HE NEVER RESORTS TO DEVIATING FROM HISTORY IN A WAY THAT WOULD BE CONVENIENT.
