Video of BMW design from 1993 to 2006
The 4 Valve Boxers from 1993 known as oilheads use an overhead valve cylinder head using short pushrods which are driven by chain driven camshafts from the crankshaft.
The large engine casing is used as a load bearing structure.
PARALEVER SUSPENSION The rear wheel is attached to a very strong single sided swingarm which is restrained by a parallelogram linkage. Road forces are damped by a single shock absorber attached to the engine casing and the swingarm. Inside the swingarm tube is the driveshaft.
TELELEVER SUSPENSION - [REDUCES BRAKING DIVE] - Comprises a wishbone under the steering head. A centrally mounted single shock absorber and 2 unconventional forks. The fork tubes do not have conventional springs or a damping mechanism within the tubes.
The gearbox and engine castings are the attachment and pivot points to which the front and rear suspension and drive train units are attached.
This design is said to separate steering, braking and suspension forces.
