When I was 18 years old, I bicycled from Maine to California.

Through 14 states I rode. Over 3,900 miles. Eleven flat tires. A busted seat. And a frame that needed re-welding. It snowed. It rained. And on some days the temperature reached 110°. Daily I was depressed. Daily I was victorious.

Sixty-eight days after I left Maine, I dipped my front tire in the Pacific Ocean.

Now, as a 60-year-old man, I am looking back through my journal remembering the transformation I experienced and the lessons I learned in an era before the internet or GPS.
