Its history began long before the racing glory. In the 1970s, the KAMAZ automotive giant was born in Naberezhnye Chelny. The Soviet Union desperately needed modern heavy trucks, and Tatarstan, with its excellent river logistics and abundant skilled labor, became the ideal location. Here, a unique engineering school took root, one capable of building machines engineered to withstand the harshest conditions.
That very foundation later gave rise to a sporting legend. In 1996, a KAMAZ thundered onto the world stage at the Paris–Dakar Rally, stunning everyone by outpacing famous Western competitors and claiming a historic victory. It was only the start: throughout the 2000s and 2010s, the KAMAZ-master team dominated Dakar again and again, becoming the ultimate embodiment of durability and unbreakable reliability.
Yet over time, the reputation of the brand that once brought worldwide pride to Tatarstan grew darker. Today, KAMAZ trucks haul entirely different loads, far from any rally tracks. Due to international sanctions and other pressures, the company’s net profit in 2024 collapsed by a staggering 28 times.
The Dakar Rally last saw KAMAZ trucks in 2022.
