In the First Age, before the creation of the moon and sun, the elf-lord Fëanor crafted the Simarils. The jewels captivated all, shining with the very essence of light from the twin trees of the Undying Lands. The covetous Dark Lord Melkor stole the gems and fled to his fortress Angband in Middle-Earth. Defying his sinister grasp, the jewels burned Melkor in his dark mountain lair even as their memory burned in the mind of Fëanor. His obsession with the jewels led him to swear an oath to destroy any being in his way, betray his elven kindred, and pursue Melkor across the sea to Middle-Earth where he would meet his ultimate fate.
