The Keeladi (Keezhadi) excavation near Madurai has unearthed stunning evidence of a 2,500 to 2,800-year-old advanced Tamil civilization. Archaeologists have found ancient Tamil-Brahmi script, game pieces, dice made of ivory, and sophisticated urban structures that point to a self-sustaining, industrial settlement - not just a religious site.

But this discovery has also sparked a serious debate.

When Dr. Amarnath Ramakrishna’s excavation report dated the site back to the 8th century BCE, the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) challenged his findings. After refusing to revise his report, Dr. Ramakrishna was transferred, and the controversy exploded into a political issue between the Central Government and the Tamil Nadu Government.

Further excavations unearthed thousands of artifacts strengthening Tamil Nadu’s claim that India’s cultural history is more diverse and possibly older than previously told.
