Hi, I’m Aisling. I’m Jess, it's nice to meet you and I hear you're running for Diversity Officer this year? Yes, so I’ve been on campus for 3 years and as a disabled student I can relate to
the inequalities minority students face at university. So, you’ve been on campus for 3 years now and as a disabled student you can relate to the inequality that minority students might
face at university Yes. So what are you going to do about it? So I have 3 key aims. I will educate our University staff on diversity So you’ve got 3 key aims, the first aim is to educate our university staff on diversity. You’ve told me that everyone wants to study, live and socialise in an equal and understanding community and so we’ve got to educate our staff in how they can make every aspect of university life as inclusive and accessible as possible. And you are going to be doing this through more Student Staff Liaison Committees. I will also educate our fellow student colleagues in disability issues and how they can support us. So you’re second aim is to educate our fellow students colleagues in disability issues and
how they can support us. Yes. And because it can be difficult and awkward to explain personal backgrounds to others who may not have encountered them before – especially as a new student and so one way of overcoming this is to fight the stigma and open the dialogue. Exactly! And I will also give you more accessible extra-curricular activities So your third aim is to provide more accessible extra-curricular activities. Yes. So you are going to actively encourage all societies to accommodate people from all backgrounds with the support from RUSU and you are going to do this by implementing a concrete system for making major adjustments whilst introducing new accessible activities. I hear you are a bit of a big personality on campus. Well… From Social and Welfare Secretary of the Riding Society, to being a member of Reading Snow Sports Society and much, much more - so it sounds like you’ve had some pretty awesome experiences already? Yes So you’ve got the three aims and your first aim is to educate our university staff on diversity. Your second aim is to educate fellow student colleagues in disability issues and how they can support us. And then your third aim is to provide more accessible extra-curricular activities Yes, now it’s your chance to be included. Fight the stigma and open the dialogue- with me. Access Aisling! And now it’s your chance to be included. Fight the stigma and open the dialogue- with her. Access Aisling!
