Let me say at the outset that this is not an indepth review or guide to the Panasonic Lumix TZ99 camera. It's just an old guy's struggles with his new camera. New cameras are aways a struggle.

That said, I do provide a solution to what is really a pretty major design flaw. The adjustable control-ring that sits around the lens is too close to the base of the camera body, so that when the camera is fixed to a tripod, the tripod-plate makes contact with the control-ring, to the extent that it is unable to rotate. When positioned flush with the camera body, the touch screen/monitor movement is also impeded by the tripod-plate.
In short, both the control-ring and touch screen/monitor are positioned too close to the bottom of the camera, a flaw that should have been picked up at the design stage.

It's not as if I'm using an unusual tripod. I use a Manfrotto Befree tripod, a popular tripod.

While wrestling with the workings of my new camera, I wander from Blairlogie's old kirk up to a seat on the lower slopes of the hill of Dumyat. It's a seat that offers wonderful views all over the flat carse around the River Forth, and along the southern face of the Ochil Hills. It's also a great spot for viewing the Wallace Monument and Stirling Castle, and a good opportunity to test the x30 optical zoom.
