The worst possible death is the Byford Dolphin incident: one diver exploded during a sudden decompression, and the others had their blood boil.
in 1983 November 5 Byford Dolphin, a semi-submerged oil drilling platform in the North Sea owned by the international British company British Petroleum
At great depths, capsules of this type are exposed to enormous external pressure, and the air inside them is highly compressed.
In order for the people inside to disembark safely and not experience a sudden drop in pressure, a certain safety procedure is provided, during which the capsule is connected to several low-pressure chambers and tanks.
On the day of the accident, the capsule was launched into shallower waters and the safety procedure proceeded as usual - at least initially. The divers working inside had already left the capsule and were traveling through the passageway to the decompression chamber. Two more of their colleagues were already in another department of this cell at that time. They were about to close the door separating the cell from the passage, when something unexpected happened. Perhaps because the capsule valve was disconnected too early, or perhaps because some sort of trig occurred, the capsule valve suddenly opened and decompressed, in other words, depressurized, the outer capsule, inside which the air was nine times more compressed than in the chambers. Four divers and one outside helper died instantly.
According to a meticulous report issued following an investigation into the 1988 incident, the three divers died instantly as the sudden drop in pressure caused a sudden expansion of air and fluids inside the body, causing the bodies to rupture from the inside. The diver closest to the exit was pushed through a small 60cm gap between the passage door and the chamber, leaving his body completely crushed and splattered. "We got what remained of the fourth diver's body in plastic bags," stated the specialists who conducted the investigation. They outlined how various parts of the body including the brain, respiratory organs, etc. were ground and pounded, and scattered around the room: for example, the liver was found in the farthest place possible. By the way, they were healthy, because they just passed through the body.
