Welcome to Whetstone Academy!
I’m Gabriel with Wild Whetstones,
I’ve been making natural sharpening
stones since 2015.
.
.
.
This first sharpening training
video is on understanding your tools.
.
.
.
Surface preparation is key,
these jasper stones hold the
Prep that I send them with
and take a very minimal
maintenance. Heres how to get
The absolute best performance
with the Ancient Ocean Jasper
stone from out here in Colorado.
.
.
.
I spend the extra time to prepare
the stones double-sided
because this increases your ability
to go from coarse to fine grit
when sharpening,
all with one stone.
.
.
.
Here is how the stone I make
the stones lapped so
they can do chip
removal all the way to
mirror edge polishing.
.
.
.
Its all in the simple surface prep, which takes 1-2 minutes,
Personally, I lap my stone lightly with a worn in 325 diamond plate
this releases a slurry and use the slurry as I sharpen.
Wether you use slurry every time, or just do a quick resurfacing
once a month, the jasper stone will continue to sharpen,
it just begins to slow down
somewhat as it eats steel.
SO
.
.
Whenever you want to refresh
the grit of your stone
it just needs a short surface refresh.
You wont need to do this
out of the box this stone is
good to sharpen with, and
even if you don’t have
a way to slurry the stone
just sharpening with water
you will notice it loading
with metal and cutting fast
for many sharpening sessions.
.
.
This quick refresh
could be every session if
you like to use slurry.
Or just wait
Until your stone is
Totally loaded with metal.
Some folks keep their
stone totally loaded with
metal so that it polishes
as finally as possible.
.
.
I encourage this understanding
of how steel acts on the stone
as your starting place
because with a little bit of easy practice
in surface conditioning, these stones
Can give two very different feels
and also trying slurry you can
accomplish any sharpening stage.
much faster.
.
.
.
This stone's capacity to be a
One Stone Hone is due to these tricks.
Sub 1000 grit all the way to 30,000
is a larger grit range to span
Than many softer stones
on the market are capable of.
This is a big advantage in choosing
a harder natural whetstone
and it is the reason that this
stone has replaced all the other
sets that I use to use.
.
.
.
The trade-off many people face when
Starting out sharpening is getting
the right tool for the job
OR
trying to learn too many
tools / adding unnecessary steps.
.
.
.
Buying whole sets of stones versus
learning how to use one stone
with many techniques is your choice.
Also consider many man made stones
Wear out. This jasper will not dish
and will last multiple lifetimes!
.
.
.
I find the trade off well worth it
as I do not need to own
multiple mid range stones
as this Jasper is a incredibly
fast finisher Stone.
.
.
.
sub 1000 grit all the way
through to a mirror polish of
30,000 grit.
.
.
.
This is my tried and true favorite stone
and I have produced hundreds and
hundreds of these natural whetstones
Since 2015.
.
.
.
The Ancient Ocean Jasper
stones come perfectly
flat on both sides and you can
change sides of your stone to
Change the cutting action.
I send one side rough feeling
plus one side lapped semi fine so it
Cuts and polishes at optimal speed.
Sharpening slightly dull tools is
a breeze on the fine side
and chip removal is very easy
on the coarsely
prepared back surface
of the whetstone.
This lapping technique
I show of marking the
surface and then removing the marks
is for ensuring
that the stones I craft
are perfectly flat and ready
for many generations of use.
Understanding how to
keep your stone cutting fast
really will give you the most
to work with.
