The Tear Function Index test is a modification of that described by Xu et al. (1995) and depends on using prepared filtered paper strips containing fluorescein. The test has been designed to allow direct measurement of the Tear Function Index using prepared tear strips.
To perform the test, the patient is seated comfortably in a room without excessive illumination.
Tell the patient what you are about to do and apologize that it is an uncomfortable procedure.
Wash your hands before the procedure.
A fluoroscein-coated tear strip is placed over the lower lid margin at the junction of the middle and lateral third of the lid.
The eye is closed and the strip is left in place for three minutes
On removal, the distance from the strip notch to the wetted dye front is recorded using the scale provided.
The strip is air dried.
The intensity of staining is compared with that of the calibrated panel of dilutions -- ranging from one point one to one point one two eight to determine the TCR.
The TFI is defined as the quotient of the Schirmer test and TCR.
Thank the patient and warn them that the eyes will feel scratchy for a while .
