Kudos to the person who put the work into recreating all these railroad logos as tree ornaments. And looking at this tree, there are only two railroads that aren't fallen flags: Metra and Amtrak.

Lots of mergers in the last 70 years -- the most famous (or infamous) was 1968 smushing together of the New York Central and Pennsylvania Railroads to form the Penn Central. Imagine GM and Ford merging. Different ways of doing things, different corporate cultures. It was a circus. But there was one successful descendant of that long ago merger: the 120 mph Metroliner, co-conceived by the Pennsylvania before the merger and introduced in January of 1969.The original Budd-built Metroliner cars have all been taken out of service, with only one preserved in original condition. But their fuselage design inspired Amtrak's Amfleet cars, which you can still ride on various non-Superliner Amtrak routes.

Other mergers were the Burlington Route and the Great Northern to form the Burlington Northern, which later joined with Santa Fe as BNSF, Illinois Central and Gulf Mobile & Ohio to make Illinois Central Gulf, which has been swallowed by Canadian National to extend its tentacles into the Deep South.
