Описание к видео The Sliding Town of Jerome, Arizona | Things To Do In Arizona

Located in the Black Hills of Yavapai County, Arizona, Jerome is a historic town with roots dating back to the late 19th century. Positioned on Cleopatra Hill, which offers stunning views of the Verde Valley, Jerome sits at an elevation exceeding 5,000 feet above sea level and can be reached by a very narrow access road. Situated approximately 100 miles north of Phoenix along State Route 89, between Sedona and Prescott, this town was founded in 1876 and was a bustling hub in the 1920s, boasting a population of over 10,000 residents, thanks to the prosperity brought by lucrative copper mines. At one time it was considered as the fourth largest city in Arizona. Today it sits on sliding and unstable ground and most of its houses cannot be purchased through mortgage, because banks will simply refuse to finance them due to high risk of collapsing.

Experts estimate that there are 88 miles of mining tunnels in Jerome area, which makes the ground very unstable and dangerous. The town has its own police and fire departments with 3 policemen. Crime is mostly negligent in this town, with majority of incidents happening on Friday nights due to alcohol consumption.

Today Jerome's population is about 450 residents. Despite the small population, the town has transformed into a unique destination renowned for its tourist attractions with over 1.5 million people visiting every year. The town boasts art galleries, coffee houses, restaurants, a state park, and a local museum focused on mining history.
