This part of the greenway runs East from the River Arts District to across the river from the French Broad River Park. It’s just over 1.5 miles; a nice alternative when you don’t have the time or transportation to get to a hike out in the mountains.

I parked near the Craven Street Bridge River Access point and started walking from there. This really feels like urban hiking with the river on your right and lots of buildings, businesses, murals and art studios on your left (across the street) including @secondgearwnc one of my favorite outdoor outfitters that sells/consigns both new and used stuff. I also really like the mural at Pleb Urban Winery @plebavl

The first part of this route is also known as the Wilma Dykeman Greenway. There are plenty of spots to sit and rest or enjoy a bite to eat along the way.

This greenway is great for:
✅ Walking
✅ Running
✅ Strolling
✅ Cycling
✅ Dogs

If you have a stroller, I would recommend just turning around and doubling back the way you came. I was seriously white-knuckling it while walking across the narrow side of the old bridge (which I assumed is for pedestrians?) that takes you over the river to the park. One wrong move and baby and I could have tumbled into oncoming traffic or down into the water. 😬

Fun fact: The French Broad River flows Northeast over 218 miles (351 km) from Rosman, NC to Knoxville, TN. This is unusual because rivers usually flow North to South.
