Welcome! My name is Munika. My fellow khmerlettes and I would like to introduce ourselves while teaching you how to greet someone properly in Khmer:

You place your palms together, incline your head slightly, and say, "cham reap sour" [pronounced cham reap suwah]. The higher you hold your hands, the more respect you pay to the person you're greeting. For instance, when I say hello to my friend, Violetta, I hold my hands at chest level.

"Cham reap sour."

If Karen becomes my boss or Kristine becomes an old man, then I would raise my hands to mouth to show a little bit more respect.

Hi, my name is Karen. When you're greeting someone older like a grandfather or a teacher, you want to raise your hand up all the way to your nose.

"Cham reap sour."

I'm Kristine, and whether I'm old or young, when I'm in the presence of royalty, monks, or a deity, I raise my hands to my eyebrows like so.

"Cham reap sour."

When you say goodbye to someone, the gesture remains the same but you say, "cham reap lear" [pronounced cham reap leah] instead.

"Cham reap lear."
