Kenya: President Ruto Vows Crackdown Against "Violence" After Parliament Ransacked

Protests against proposed tax hikes in Kenya's capital, Nairobi, turned violent as demonstrators stormed parliament, setting part of the building on fire. President William Ruto condemned the violence, stating the demonstrations were hijacked by dangerous elements and vowed to crack down on those responsible. Ruto said that "criminals pretending to be peaceful protesters" hijacked the demonstrations. Police responded with gunfire, resulting in at least five deaths. The largely peaceful protests had been ongoing for a week before erupting into chaos on June 25. Protesters threw stones at police and ransacked the parliament compound. The military was deployed to support the police, using tear gas and water cannons. UN Chief Antonio Guterres and the White House have urged restraint.
