A4 - Visual Tricks mission, is like this long tutorial for the Darklight. Not only do you need to head back to the lab to pick the gear up, but you also need to use it a lot to complete the level in Gloomy Manor. It all comes to a head when you track down your first Boo in the Dining Room and you'll need to use the Darklight to get it into the Poltergust 5000. The Boo is responsible for all of the visual tricks going on in A4, so once you get it you complet the level.
