I’ve failed goals before. Here’s what I learned that actually works:

1. Learn to break your goals into smaller tasks that you can accomplish daily or weekly. For example, are you trying to save $10k? A good weekly goal would be to open a high-yield savings account or transfer a small amount of money into an investment account. Significant goals become easier when you can reason about them in chunks.

2. Instead of crafting net-new time for goals, try to fit them into your existing routines. For example, I wanted to start this channel, and the lowest friction entry point was to do my videos during my commute. I have to drive to work anyway, so this doesn’t add extra time to my day. Another example—my dog. When I trained him, I would use feeding time for training moments or outside time, before going out. The point is not to let your goals feel like chores, but an extension of your day.

3. Premature optimization is the root of all evil. When starting something new, focus on the basics. Want to become a YouTuber? While it might sound fun and exciting to go and get the latest and most excellent camera, your focus should be on consistency first. Want to become a programmer? Should you get the best computer on the market? No. Start small and build expertise from humble beginnings. Rewards come later.

These three mindset shifts have allowed me to accomplish more goals. Try them out, and let me know where you are in your journey!
