"What we have found in these excavations is a cemetery which is dating from the pre Inca period at the site at Pachacamac. This cemetery is exceptional in the sense that it is totally intact - there is no looting from the (Spanish) conquest or after. We have encountered super-imposed burials - so one beneath the other - which represent several different cultures and periods of the site. And they are with their burial goods, which represent also different periods. So, it will be very interesting for us and very important to precise the chronology of the site and also the identity of those people that came here to be buried at Pachacamac."

STORYLINE:

Archaeologists have uncovered a large grave site at the ancient ruins of Pachacamac in Peru, including pre-Inca pilgrims who presumably came seeking cures from the oracle deity for diseases like syphilis, tuberculosis and cancer and mummy bundles containing whole families, the project's leader said.

"This cemetery is exceptional in the sense that it is totally intact - there is no looting from the (Spanish) conquest or after. " archaeologist Peter Eeckhout of the Free University of Brussels said.

Eeckhout said the find would help determine the chronology of the site and the succession of cultures which followed.
