In the 1800's, tuberculosis reached epidemic levels, causing nearly 25% of all deaths in Europe. And yet, for artists and writers, it came to be seen as a romanticized disease that allowed them to create more freely and more productively. There were many cases in history of both artists and writers having extremely productive periods of work while sick with tuberculosis. This video explores that weird phenomenon, called spes phthisica and specifically explores the phenomenon among writers.
