LYRICS IN THE DESCRIPTION

The Time of Cherries , le Temps des cerises, a classic French love song written in 1866, but also a revolutionary song closely associated with the Paris Commune in 1871? And a young nurse during the "Semaine sanglante" is the key behind this seemingly bizarre connection? Here is the story, as explained by the author Jean Baptiste Clément himself in 1885:

"Since this song ran through the streets, I wanted to dedicate it, out of memory and sympathy, to a valiant girl who, too, ran through the streets at a time that called for great devotion and proud courage! The following story is one of those which one will never forget: Sunday, May 28, 1871... Between eleven and twelve o'clock we saw a young girl of twenty to twenty-two years of age coming to us, holding a basket in her hands... Despite our refusal to keep her with us, she insisted and did not want to leave. As a matter of fact, five minutes later, she proved to be useful. Two of our comrades fell, shot, one by a bullet to the shoulder, the other to the middle of the forehead...

"We only knew that she was called Louise and she was a factory girl. So naturally she stood with the rebels and the las-de-vivre. What happened to her in the end? Had she been, like so many others, shot by the Versaillais? Was it not to this obscure heroine I shall dedicate this most popular song of all in this volume? "

So, an originally ordinary song of love has now become of a revolutionary time long past. Lyrics such as "like drops of blood," "do not fear the cruellest of pains," and "the memory I keep in heart" have also gained a new layer of meaning. Maybe it was just a coincidence, or maybe it was something else, la Commune de Paris lasted from just March to May--the time of cherries.
