A traditional Thai fair (งานวัด ngaan wat or temple fair) is a lively community event that blends culture, food, and entertainment. At times held in public parks and grounds, combined with popular Thai festivals.
These fairs often pop up around temples or during festivals and give a nostalgic glimpse into Thai life. Rare occasion to see traditional Thai lifestyles in cities like Bangkok. Food items at these Thai fairs could differ, based on the location.
Expect to find these at most Thai fairs. Some fairs especially, those organized at widely known temples
Food stalls: classic street food like grilled chicken, som tam (papaya salad), noodles, fried insects, sweets, and coconut ice cream. When held close to towns and cities expect to see items like fruit juices, local pizzas and even cakes.
Low-priced toys & trinkets: bubble guns, balloons, plastic toys, masks, and lucky charms. Keep a watch for items with sharp or pointed edges and corners, also toys being bought for kids below 5 to 6 years should be carefully inspected. Avoid laser tipped pens and pointers and toys with bright LEDs.
Games & activities: dart throwing, balloon popping, fishing games, shooting galleries, Ferris wheels, and merry-go-rounds. Play these for fun, rarely see squabbles but do not try to entertain yourself if you have any doubts. Many of these activities are seen only, at traditional fairs in Thailand. Things like merry-go-rounds and giant wheels could pose safety concerns.
Shows & performances: traditional dance, luk thung (Thai country music), live bands, and sometimes even shadow puppetry. Music can be loud and do not expect high quality ballet dances!
Beware of these issues when going around fairs in Thailand. Keep in mind that the larger the crowds, the higher the risk.
Pickpockets – since fairs can get very crowded, keeping valuables in front pockets or crossbody bags is safer. In the case of large fairs, do not stroll around areas that are not well lit or in spots that appear deserted.
Food hygiene – most stalls are fine, but it’s best to choose freshly cooked items. Summers can quickly spoil milk or coconut milk based food items. Rainy seasons are known to encourage the growth of bacteria and fungus.
Overcrowding – especially near the stage and game stalls. Ensure that children are always with you. Raise a big alarm if your kid has got separated from you. Most fairs have security staff or policemen near the entrance and exit. Notice this as you enter the fair.
Fairs in Thailand mean fun-time, go relaxed and leave high expectations at home. Use common sense to stay safe. Decide on a meeting point that would be referenced if, members in your group get separated and cannot find each other.
