On February 15th, 2023, Officer Lorek was on patrol in a mall parking lot when he observed a white Nissan backed into a parking spot with no front plate in Orland Park, Illinois. He parked next to the Nissan and checked the rear registration which appeared to be a fictitious California temporary paper plate. The paper plate had been folded along the edges and was not a uniform size. He cross-checked the VIN on the paper plate to the windshield window VIN and found that they didn't match. He then entered his patrol vehicle to inquire about the plate number and both VIN numbers. He learned that the last registration plate tied to the VIN on the windshield came back suspended, and the VIN on the temporary registration came back with no record on file. While he was conducting his research further, he observed the lights click on and off on the Nissan and observed a male and female approach the car.
