Wanted: Participation in Democracies and the Media | GMF24

Описание к видео Wanted: Participation in Democracies and the Media | GMF24

Fewer and fewer people are willing to actively participate in democratic processes. Voter turnout is declining worldwide, while extremist and populist positions continue to gain ground. Even at the local level, the political rhetoric has become harsher and can sometimes actually sound quite dangerous. Meanwhile, freedom of expression and freedom of the press have also increasingly come under threat.

At the same time, the digital world presents a plethora of (potential) participation formats, and there is also a growing need for exchange ‘in real life’.

Are democracies becoming obsolete – and if so, how can the media help to reverse this trend? How can journalism highlight the value and importance of democratic engagement?

Panelists:
- Prof. Dr. Adriano Nuvunga, scholar and human rights activist specializing in Mozambique and Africa
- Tasaffy Hossain is an advocate for gender and sexuality rights, based in Dhaka, Bangladesh
- Aliaksandra Pushkina is a media manager and communication specialist with more than 10 years of experience
- Tom Rhodes is a veteran journalist and editor based in East Africa
