This video teaches kids that we need to "Make the Sounds We See," and that "It's a No Guess Zone!" If your kids know quite a few of their letters and the sounds those letters represent, they're ready to begin reading! We do not want our kids to memorize sight words. We want them to memorize the letter sounds and lean on those sounds as they decode words. Don't worry. We'll get to the more sophisticated sounds. For now, let's keep it simple and ensure that our kids lean on the code to promote outstanding reading and spelling skills. I am including a free downloadable short vowel game board that you can play with your kids. If your kids "just know" words, that's great! Invite them to be sure the word says what they think it says by pointing to each letter as they read across the word. Eventually, all of these words will be sight words. In order to orthographically map them, we must provide many engaging opportunities for kids to deliberately decode (read) and encode (spell) words. When you've finished playing the game I'm including, here, invite your kids to spell 5-6 words from the game board.
