Had this project hanging around awhile in the garage and with it still being pretty cold, I thought I should turn something simple. Zen Pen is a pretty simple project. The only thing could go wrong (which has on many occasions) is the wood splits, breaks, chips or you shave it down too low, exposing the brass.

I turned a bowl from bloodwood over a year ago and its very dark red and blood looking. I also know this would be very hard and finish well. Unfortunately, the dark blood color didn’t come in this chunk of lumber. Maybe this is the plasma version.

Regardless of the color in the wood, I think it came out fantastic. It has a wonderful chatoyance and luster from the finish. I also can see if there is a difference between the handling of pen completed in Ack vs OB Shine Juice. Really, the Acks is meant for food safe products, but I think it works well with about anything.
