Sunrisers Hyderabad

There is a case for SRH to strengthen their lower order by bringing back Abhishek Sharma or even hand a debut to Virat Singh in place of Abdul Samad. Vijay Shankar's bowling form gives them that luxury.

Probable XI: David Warner (C), Jonny Bairstow (WK), Manish Pandey, Vijay Shankar, Jason Holder, Priyam Garg, Abhishek Sharma/Abdul Samad, Rashid Khan, Khaleel Ahmed, Sandeep Sharma, T Natarajan

Live pictures show Ajinkya Rahane receiving throwdowns, as are Shikhar Dhawan and Shreyas Iyer. That probably means that Prithvi Shaw is sitting out today as well.
Both teams do have areas of concern. DC have been a largely well-rounded unit but the form of Prithvi Shaw and Rishabh Pant will worry them. The former even got dropped last game for Ajinkya Rahane, and it remains to be seen if the youngster gets back in the XI today or not. Pant has looked rusty with his hitting, although his general approach this season early in his innings has seen progress with no real rashness. However, his USP has been the unconventional hitting prowess that he possesses and it is yet to come off for him. DC would want him to find form before the playoffs. SRH could have a tight call to make if Kane Williamson gets fit, as Jason Holder has been efficient in the games he has played but with batting being their major concern, it might be a tough decision. We'll get all the confirmations shortly after the toss.
It's crunch time for Warner's men and their captain would know it. SRH have been guilty of throwing away games, none more obvious than their previous loss which was a choke of epic proportions against KXIP. Such defeats always sting hard but there is no time for retrospection with the short turnaround between games. And against a potent DC side who are themselves hurt after a heavy defeat to KKR, expect no leeway whatsoever. While Delhi will want to ensure that they strengthen their grip on a top-two finish, Hyderabad are in that do-or-die zone where they have no option but to win. All this makes for a potentially engrossing contest, and let's hope that the two teams bring their A game to the table tonight. On that note, this is Hari giving you all a warm welcome from the Cricbuzz Comm Box for our coverage of the game.
16:45 local, 18:15 IST: 10 league games left and the playoffs race has gotten hotter. As things stand, no team has officially qualified and we could actually have a situation where five teams get locked on 16 points. That's how tight things are in the points table. Today's fixture features two sides who have a lot at stake, albeit for different reasons. DC cruised through the first leg but have lost a bit of fizz in recent games with some sour defeats. They're still pretty much well-placed and a win today should virtually seal the deal as far as their playoff berth is concerned. Not so much for SRH who in must-win scenario and even winning all their remaining fixtures won't be enough, as they'll have to depend on other results as well. The only positive for them though, is their NRR should there be multiple teams locked on 14.

In 2016, Sunrisers Hyderabad overcame the odds to win three games in a matter of five days to clinch the title. Almost four and a half years later, they are tasked with a similar challenge.

But this one won't guarantee them the title. This won't even guarantee them a playoff spot but if they do manage to win all three of their remaining games over the next 7 days, they will remain in the hunt to reach the last four.

For a team that has won only four games this season, losing seven, it's a massive challenge. What makes it even harder is that those games are against the top three sides of the competition - Mumbai Indians, Delhi Capitals and Royal Challengers Bangalore.

Is it really an impossible task though? Kings XI Punjab will shrug off such suggestions. They came back from the dead and boosted their own chances by pulling off exactly the same. So SRH can definitely afford to take inspiration from KXIP's turnaround.

And among those three teams, DC stand in SRH's path first up. DC find themselves in the midst of a jittery run, having lost their last two games, so SRH would want to believe they are probably facing them at the right time. But Ricky Ponting knows that losing cannot become a habit now especially at the fag end of the tournament.

They do have a concern right at the top of the order that they will look to address. While Shikhar Dhawan's transformation has given them a boost, runs aren't being scored at the other end. Prithvi Shaw is going through a lean run and Ajinkya Rahane hasn't clicked at all so far. Rishabh Pant too hasn't been his usual destructive-self this season, with an alarming drop in the strike rate compared to the last two years. If he can find some
