Welcome to one of the most magical natural wonders in Mexico — Grutas de Tolantongo.
Located in the mountains of central Mexico, this vast resort area features natural caves, hot springs, waterfalls, and a turquoise blue thermal river surrounded by dramatic canyon views. 🌄💧

At over 4,000 feet (1280 meters) in altitude, the warm thermal waters flow from volcanic mountains into a cave and a stunning river that looks completely unreal. The mix of nature and the careful development by the local community makes Tolantongo both natural and man-made, yet beautifully preserved.

We began our adventure at the natural cave, accessed by a paved walkway with cold water dripping from the waterfall above. Inside the cave, you’ll find hot thermal waters and a strong waterfall flowing right from the center. With the help of our tour guide and flashlights, we explored the tunnel — such a fun and unique experience!

Next, we visited the turquoise thermal river, which completely took my breath away. Its endless stretch of blue warm water is known for its therapeutic healing benefits. The river is dammed at intervals to create relaxing pools with beautiful views of the mountains and canyon.

Though shade is limited along the river, you can enjoy the experience best during early mornings or late afternoons, or rent shaded seating to rest in between.
