Black Quarter (BQ) — also known as Blackleg — is a highly fatal bacterial disease that affects cattle, especially young animals (6 months to 2 years old). It causes sudden death due to severe muscle infection, (necrotic myositis) most often in the hind legs.

Causative Agent: 🦠

🧫Clostridium chauvoei
A Gram-positive, spore-forming, anaerobic rod-shaped bacterium.
It produces potent exotoxins that cause muscle necrosis, gas production, and systemic toxemia.
Spores are highly resistant and can survive in the soil for years.





⚠️ Key Symptoms:
✅Sudden death without prior signs (in many cases)

✅Swelling (hot, painful at first, later cold and spongy) in the hip, shoulder, or leg muscles

✅Lameness and high fever

✅Crepitus (crackling sound) in the swelling due to gas production

✅ Dark, discolored skin over the swelling


💉 Treatment of Black Quarter Disease:

🚨 Early treatment is critical — delay can lead to death within 12–48 hours.

1☑️. Antibiotics (injectable)
Penicillin is the drug of choice:
Procaine Penicillin G: High doses IM (intramuscularly), for 3–5 days
Oxytetracycline (as an alternative)
2. ☑️Anti-inflammatory drugs
NSAIDs (e.g., Meloxicam, Flunixin Meglumine) to reduce pain, swelling, and fever
3. ☑️Wound drainage and disinfection
If there is a swelling (abscess), it should be:
Surgically opened and drained
Flushed with antiseptics (e.g., iodine or hydrogen peroxide)
4. ☑️Supportive therapy
Fluids (in severe cases)
Multivitamins (to support recovery)

🛡️ Prevention is Better Than Cure:

Vaccination is the best preventive measure:
Give BQ vaccine annually, especially before the rainy season.
Maintain cleanliness in housing and avoid trauma or wounds.
Avoid grazing in wet, muddy pastures where spores thrive.
