On January 17, 2015, the Central of Georgia Heritage Unit wound up leading mixed freight train 36Q from Linwood, NC to Allentown, PA. This train is normally a nocturnal run on the Lurgan Branch between Hagerstown, MD and Harrisburg, PA. East of Harrisburg, on the Harrisburg Line, this train can normally be seen at the crack of dawn and early in the morning; however, we got news that the train had a late departure from Linwood, so our plan was to head to the Lurgan Branch and chase the train in the nice morning sun from Chambersburg, PA to Reading, PA, but as misfortune would have it, the crew was not called for 36Q at Hagerstown, MD until later in the afternoon, thus by the time the train ran, the sun was not the most favorable for shots. Thankfully, some cloud cover aided us along the way and in the end, I am glad I waited, because even though the light wasn't the most favorable, the low sun setting in the sky made for a dramatic chase which resulted in four different shots of the train and I was happy with the way they turned out, hopefully you will enjoy them as well!

Train and video information:
January 17, 2015: We ended up bagging the train at four locations, both on the Lurgan Branch and Harrisburg Line. The Lurgan Branch runs through the beautiful farmlands of the Cumberland Valley, so it was a foremost priority to capture scenes related farming, including the fields, the farm houses and barns, and a feed mill along the way. As the sun started to set, we found ourselves along the Harrisburg Line at Hershey, Pennsylvania, the "Sweetest Place on Earth".
0:00 - Just north of Shippensburg, PA, 36Q leans into a curve as it passes the surrounding farmlands near Milepost 34 on the single track main of the Lurgan Branch.
1:25 - 20 miles up the Lurgan, we capture the train leaning into yet another curve past the ideal red farm house and barn setting. Most of the curves on the Lurgan are super-elevated for fast moving intermodal trains.
2:40 - A few miles later in Lemoyne, which is just before the crossing of the Susquehanna River in Harrisburg, 36Q runs opposing in the siding between Ross and Front Street to get around another train. The low afternoon sun causes glint on the train as it passes the long-abandoned C. S. Willis and Son's Feed Mill.
5:00 - Under the waning golden sun, the train glows as it passes the remnants of the original Hershey's Chocolate Factory, most of which was torn down in 2012-13 to make way for new development. The iconic Hershey Smoke stacks still stand on the left, as does the original power house, which is just a shell of its original function, hopefully to be preserved for future generations.
