Hi there I'm Doctor Andrea Libutti, and this video I'm going to explain the First Cornerstone to Autism Independence for your child;

this is by far THE MOST IMPORTANT one, and that is...

COMMUNICATION

I'm going to give you a couple of examples to highlight why autism communication it's so important, and then I'm going to show you some modalities that you can use to help your child with autism communicate, non-verbal or not.

So...

Let me tell you about one particular experience I had: a friend of mine had a non-verbal 16 year old boy and he was in the public school system; it got to the point where he was becoming SO AGGRESSIVE and so frustrated he was KNOCKING THINGS OVER.

I'm talking about knocking tables over, hitting people, aggressive to the point where the family had a meeting with the powers to be, and they clearly said to them:

"Listen, your child can't come here anymore. WE CANNOT MANAGE HIM, or handle him."

Fast forward a few months later, and his parents, who were very "out of the box" thinkers, started thinking about their autism communication bottleneck:

"Ok, there HAS to be something going on here, there has to be a way that we can get in and know what's going on with our child thoughts."

RPM (Rapid Prompting Method) is the method that they used to start communicating with their child with autism, and the tantrums and frustrations and aggression ALL BUT MELTED AWAY ALMOST INSTANTANEOUSLY, when he started being able to communicate effectively;

and it did NOT take very long.

He was so relieved that he actually had a modality to communicate what was going on.

And the things that were coming out of his head were so profound, and so insightful, and so heartbreaking for the parents, because ALL THESE YEARS they had no idea what their child with autism knew, understood, thought, or was capable of.

That reminds me about another parent that I met at an event...

He was talking about autism communication with his son that was 19 years old at the time, and had JUST STARTED LEARNING RPM.

This child was not aggressive (or so called "behavioral"), but her mom was worried: "I have no idea if my child knows math, I don't know if he knows how to read or write, and I don't know what's going on with him".

Within a few months of doing RPM all of that opened up, and here's what they discovered...
