When you were in school, did you ever wonder whether or not the things you were learning about applied to the real world? Have you thought about why some programs or policies actually improve people’s health and some don’t? In 2016, Barbara Duerst began teaching a community based learning course to Master of Public Health (MPH) students to help them comprehend the role of evidence in making efficient and effective decisions about initiatives, programs and policies that impact the way that people live, work, and play in healthy communities. Through a partnership with UniverCity Alliance, Barbara and her classes have worked with over 20 organizations, groups, coalitions, and communities throughout Wisconsin to improve their health outcomes and use their limited resources wisely. Examples of some of the important work recently implemented in Green and Adams counties of Wisconsin will be shared.
