A brief hike past the famous (well it’s all relative) Carbeth Huts, about 10 minutes north of Milngavie, outskirts of Glasgow. £1000 pa , 20 year lease gives you somewhere to place your meagre hut or luxurious pied-a-terre in the quiet wooded countryside, far from a phone signal.
From the official noticeboard this neat little history:
" Welcome to Carbeth
The origins of the Carbeth Community go back to the beginning of the 20th century. landowner Allan Barnes Graham was sympathetic to the ideals of the Carion movement and allowed the Clarion Cyclists to hold an Annual Fellowship camp on his land.

Eventually the campers built a permanent wooden structure for entertainment and for storing tents. At one time 40 Camps were established . Amongst them Suffragettes, church groups and ramblers organisations.

Every weekend people gathered around campfires to discuss. Many young men and women, yet to be discoveed in the world of politics, education and climbing, were to find their inspiration here. Famous mountaineering clunbs like the Creag Dhu, Lomond and Ptarmigan were created, the seeds of Scotland's national parks were sown and men trained at Carbeth to prepare to go out and fight fascism in Spain in the late 30's.

Hutting at Carbeth was established from 1918, after the first World War. People from Glasgow and Clydebank were allowed to self-build small wooden huts to escape the widespread pollution in the Clyde Valley.

Many cycled out to Carbeth carrying what building materials they could to build huts. There are stories of visitors being encourages to bring a brick, or other materials, in exchange for a cup of tea.

Hut numbers expanded in 1943 when families were rehoused at Carbeth after the Clydebank Blitz.

During the 1950's Carbeth had its first heyday, with 250 huts, a tearoom, shops, the Carbeth Inn and a swimming pool with diving boards and changing rooms.

The estate was bough by the community in 2013. There are presently 177 huts on site. Visitors are most welcome. "
