Chasing Surf in a True Kit Inflatable - Crossing the Bar and trying to swamp the boat!

We often have it pointed out to us that our videos are always on sunny days in nice smooth water. So we decided to take one of our Discovery 4.0m inflatable boats out in the middle of winter in Auckland, New Zealand and do a bar crossing and play in the surf. We can pretend that this is work, but really we do this for fun!

Taking a small inflatable boat out in surf can be dangerous so make sure you know what you are doing, know what you are getting yourself into and you have the right boat. Our Discovery boats are very manoeuvrable and controllable in and out of the waves. Acceleration and an extremely stable platform are key for this. This is achieved from the Discoverys oversized, extremely buoyant pontoons and catamaran flat bottom hull design. The transoms are very stiff and fast draining so any water that does enter the boat, exits quickly.

A common conception of our Discovery boats is that due to the open bow design water will easily come over the front and into the boat. As you can clearly see from this video, this is not the case. You actually have to put the bow under a wave to get water into the boat.

The package that we took out on this day was a Discovery 4.0m with a Mercury 9.9hp and 2 adults weighing 85kg each. As you can see the boat handles the rough conditions beautifully.
