It is estimated that nearly one out of ten (9.2%) American children between the ages of five and 17 suffer from myopia. Myopia or nearsightedness is the inability to see objects clearly at distance.
Myopia management is the prevention of myopia progression in order to reduce the risks that come with having a higher prescription. As such we recommend that any child with myopia or pre-myopia come in for a myopia evaluation to fully understand the benefits of proactive care.
In this video, Dr. Eric Ikeda, FCOVD, DPNAP, a recipient of the Skeffington Prize and former president of Neuro-Optometric Rehabilitation Association talks about myopia management. Over time, it can be caused by reading a book in poor lighting, spending too much time looking at digital devices, and being too close to a screen or book while reading. Avoiding all of these could help prevent myopia. To slow down its progression, Dr. Ikeda recommends CRT lenses which are a type of ortho–k lenses that are worn at night and gently shape the eye while sleeping. Another popular option are MiSight lenses which are FDA approved contact lenses for myopia management.
