Bilirubin is a brown-yellow liquid that is formed when red blood cells break down. This substance is found in the liver and is usually eliminated from the body during digestion. When new cells are formed, old red blood cells are destroyed, which means everyone has bilirubin in their body.

Bilirubin becomes dangerous only when it starts accumulating in the blood. Having high levels of bilirubin can cause jaundice, which is a medical condition. In jaundice, the skin appears yellow, it can be a sign of liver disease in children and adults.
Jaundice often occurs in newborn babies. Because the liver of infants is not very efficient in removing bilirubin from the body. If jaundice in babies is not treated, increased bilirubin can be dangerous for babies in the form of jaundice.
