Soundarya Lahiri, meaning “The Wave of Beauty”, is a revered Sanskrit hymn traditionally attributed to Adi Shankaracharya. Each verse is both poetry and spiritual instruction — praising the Divine Mother’s beauty, grace, and supreme power, while also mapping the subtle journey of kundalini, or life energy, through the chakras. In this rendition by Sounds of Isha, each verse offers a step into deeper devotion, inner transformation, and the celebration of the Divine Feminine as the very heartbeat of creation.


Lyrics and Translation:
Mahim mulādhāre kamapi maṇipūre hutavaham
Sthitaṁ svādhiṣṭhāne hṛdi marutam ākāśam upari;
Mano’pi bhrūmadhye sakalamapi bhittvā kulapathaṁ
Sahasrāre padme saha rahasi patyā viharase.

Devi, you dwell in secret union with your consort, Shiva,
In the thousand-petaled lotus at the crown of the sahasrara;
Having ascended through the subtle path of the chakras,
Passing through muladhara, manipura, svadhisthana,
Then reaching the anahata and the sky above;
The mind, having pierced all these, finds union at the brow,
And finally merges with You in the sahasrara above.

Sudhā-dhāra-sarais caraṇa-yugalānta-vigalitaih
Prapañcaṁ siñcanti punarapi rasāmnāya-mahaśaḥ;
Avāpya svāṁ bhūmiṁ bhujaga-nibham adhyuṣṭa-valayaṁ
Svām ātmānaṁ kṛtvā svapiṣi kulakuṇḍe kuharinī.

Your two feet pour forth streams of nectar
Which nourish and sustain the entire universe;
Yet again, returning through the great river of consciousness,
You repose within the muladhara,
Coiled like a serpent, asleep in the cavity of the inner womb.

Jagat sūte dhātā harir avati rudraḥ kṣapayate
Tiraskurvan etat svam api vapur īśas tirayati;
Sadā-pūrvaḥ sarvaṁ tad idam anugṛhṇāti ca śiva-
Stavajñām ālambya kṣaṇa-calitayor bhrū-latikayoḥ.

Brahma creates the world, Vishnu preserves, and Rudra destroys,
All under the control of Shiva, who, by a mere twitch of Your brows,
Manifests these acts through You—O Devi,
You are the power behind the deities, hidden even in Shiva's form.

Japo jalpaḥ śilpaṁ sakalam api mudrā-viracanaṁ
Gatiḥ pradakṣiṇya-kramaṇam āsanādy āhuti-vidhiḥ;
Praṇāmaḥ saṁveśaḥ sukham akhilam ātmarpaṇa-dṛśā
Saparyā-paryāyas tava bhavatu yan me vilasitam.

Let all my actions—chanting, whispering, art, gestures,
Walking, performing pradakshina, sitting, making offerings,
Bowing, resting, even all pleasures—
Become offerings in worship to You, O Divine Mother,
Done in the spirit of complete self-surrender.

Tava svādhiṣṭhāne hutavaham adhiṣṭhāya niratam
Tam īḍe sarvathā janani mahatīṁ tāṁ ca samayam;
Yad āloké lokān dahati mahasi krodha-kalitē
Dayārdrā yā dṛṣṭiḥ śiśiram upacāraṁ racayati.

I worship that great fire of kundalini within Your svadhisthana chakra,
That ever burns, consuming the worlds when ignited in wrath;
Yet, when Your compassionate gaze falls upon beings,
That same fire becomes cool, soothing, and protective.

Tavādhāre mūlé saha samayayā lasya-parayā
Navātmānaṁ manye nava-rasa-mahā-tāṇḍava-naṭam;
Ubhābhyām etābhyām udaya-vidhi-m uddhiśya dayayā
Sanāthābhyāṁ jagne janaka-jananīm adya jagatām.

In Your muladhara, together with Your partner Samaya,
You perform a cosmic dance full of the nine emotions;
From You both—mother and father of the universe—
Compassionately arose this world, guided by divine will.
Vibhakta-trivarṇyaṁ vyatikarita-līlāñjanatayā
Vibhāti tvan-netra-tritayam idam īśāna-dayite;
Punaḥ sraṣṭuṁ devān Druhiṇa-Hari-Rudrān uparatān
Rajaḥ-sattvaṁ vibhraṭ tama iti guṇānāṁ trayam iva.
Your three eyes shine as the source of the three gunas:
Rajas, Sattva, and Tamas;
When the gods—Brahma, Vishnu, and Rudra—cease to act,
It is Your playful glance that again reactivates them,
As if creating the world anew with each glance.
