Carl Rowland has been to Cressing Temple Barns, to learn more about historic timber frame repair at the “Traditional Timber Frame Repair and Conservation” course, organised by Place Services and run by Rick Lewis.

Cressing Temple Barns is a fantastic setting, rich in ancient history. Built in the 13th century, the magnificent Grade I listed Barley and Wheat Barns were part of large farmstead built by the Knights Templar. The barns are amongst the oldest timber barns and some of the few surviving Templar buildings in England. The barns are open to the public, alongside a restored Tudor walled garden and well worth a visit.

The course on timber repairs and historic carpentry, covered identifying defects, understanding when repairs are needed and how to approach repairs effectively.

GHA have long experience with timber frame repair, but every day brings more education! These images and sketches show a small fraction of our past projects involving timber frames, and we’ll be looking to apply any new advice to current and future projects.
