In 1979, as the Iranian Revolution reached its peak, the U.S. Embassy in Tehran was overrun and dozens of Americans were taken hostage. But six diplomats managed to slip out unnoticed, finding temporary refuge in the homes of Canadian diplomats. Their problem was simple and terrifying: they couldn’t stay hidden forever, and escaping Iran without being caught was nearly impossible.

The CIA needed a plan that was so absurd, so unconventional, that Iranian security forces wouldn’t even think to suspect it. Enter Tony Mendez, a CIA exfiltration specialist. His solution? Pretend the six diplomats were part of a Hollywood film crew scouting exotic locations for a sci-fi movie.

To make the cover story airtight, the CIA built a full fake production company in Los Angeles. They created posters, business cards, ads in Variety, even a script for a fictional film called Argo. When Mendez arrived in Tehran, he trained the diplomats to become actors, directors, and producers—complete with backstories and character biographies.

On January 28, 1980, carrying forged passports and Hollywood bravado, the group walked through Tehran’s airport. Against impossible odds, they boarded a Swiss Air flight and escaped.

It became one of the most daring, creative rescues in CIA history.
