By letting water back into drained marshland, and supporting farmers who farm for nature, we’re creating the conditions for waders to return and recover in Eastern England.

In the spring of 1983, twice as many Lapwings danced overhead as do today. Their rapid decline matches that of Britain’s farmland birds in general, which have halved in the past 50 years.

Changes in the way we farm the land have contributed to this, but farming can also be part of the solution. That’s why we’re working with farmers to restore water to the landscape – creating the muddy habitat which waders need to thrive. By finding ways to keep water on the land into late spring and early summer, we can help Lapwing chicks to find the food they need to fledge the nest.

This work on the Suffolk Coast, Norfolk Broads, and Kent's Hoo Peninsula, is part of the Species Coastal and Wetlands programme. It is funded by the Species Survival Fund, a partnership between Defra and the National Lottery Heritage Fund.

The site is owned by the Church Commissioners for England, who are a key partner on the Hoo Peninsula.
