Soviet Film: Pan Am Resumes Service Between the United States and the Soviet Union (1988, Russian)

Описание к видео Soviet Film: Pan Am Resumes Service Between the United States and the Soviet Union (1988, Russian)

This film was produced by the Soviet government. On May 14, 1988, a Pan American World Airways Boeing 747, N733PA named the "Clipper Moscow Express," resumed service from the United States to the U.S.S.R.

Pan Am and Aeroflot Soviet Airlines had an agreement under which the two carriers would jointly offer the first non-stop commercial service between the New York and Moscow. The agreement, approved by both governments, was signed in Moscow on September 25, 1987.

The two carriers jointly operated non-stop flights between New York and Moscow using Pan Am Boeing 747 jets staffed by Pan Am cockpit and flight service crews. Aeroflot had the option of placing up to three of its flight attendants aboard the flights to serve as interpreters.

The development between Pan Am and Aeroflot was made possible by the bilateral aviation agreement that followed the Geneva summit in 1985.

Aeroflot service to the United States was suspended by President Ronald Reagan in 1981 in retaliation for the Soviets alleged role in the crackdown in Poland. Prior to that suspension, Pan Am stopped service to Moscow for economic reasons 'totally unrelated' to Reagan's move and Pan Am resumed its one-stop service to Moscow in April 1986.

Note: At the 2:07 mark there is a Pan Am 747 with a test livery that was ultimately rejected by the airline in favor of the "billboard" livery as part of the mid-1980s brand refresh.
