Temple History:

Once, a king by the name "Kuban" ruled this place and he was a devotee of Lord Vishnu. lived and he was against a Rishi named "Thutheesee". Thirumaal was along with the Kuban and as requested by him, Thirumaal threw the chakram towards the Rishi to kill him. But, due to the spiritual powers of the rishi, the chakram did not slice his body instead the edges of the chakram got damaged. Mahavishnu desired to get the Sudharshana Chakra from Shiva which He had used to slay the mighty asuraChalandran.Thirumaal after realizing his action came to this Sthalam and worshipped Shiva Perumaan. He used to perform poojas, for the Perumaan by dedicating 1000 lotus flowers daily. Likewise, one day while doing the pooja, he could find only 999 flowers. So, he finally plucks one of his beautiful eyes and dedicated to Shiva Perumaan offered it in the puja. After seeing this, Shiva Perumaan came in front of Him, showed his presence Pleased with his determination, Lord Siva restored his eye saying that “as you offered your eye for a lotus flower, you will have the eye with lotus beauty and you will be known as Senthamaraikkannan. and gave the chakram towards him. Since Sri Hari (Thirumaal) got back his chakram, this Sthalam is called as "HariChakkrapuram" and since, thirumaal got Peru (the reason for which he worshipped the Perumaan is successful) it is called "Thirumaalperu (Thirumaal + Peru) ". Since thirumaal dedicated his Netram (eyes), he is called as "SenthamaraiKannaperumal". Gnanasambhandhar in his DevaraPathigam explains the worship of Thirumaal and Chandran while singing about this Sthalam.
As per another legend, once Lord Shiva told his consort Parvati that the entire universe was operating due to him. Parvati wanted to test that and she suddenly closed the eyes of Shiva. The entire universe stopped operating for a moment. Parvati realized her mistake; to get rid of her sin, she came to this site and made Shiv Linga out of the sand. She used to worship the idol daily. She was so immersed in her poojas that she did not notice even when the Lord appeared. The Lord got angry due to this; he released the river Kaveri (not Ganga?) from his head to destroy his own sand idol. The river once started flowing in this region was called as 'Palau'. Parvati sought help of Lord Vishnu to protect the idol; Vishnu lied down across the river as a bridge and protected the idol. As the idol is made up of sand, even today, the priests do not touch the idol - it is called as 'TheendaTirumeni' (the Lord who cannot be touched).
This lingam is the presiding deity in this temple, worshipped by both Parvathi and Vishnu. Here the pooja is done without touching the deity because they say Siva here is Teendathirumenynadhar with kavacham always.
Another interesting feature is the presence of Nandi in the form of the statue with a monkey face. Once Ravana came to this temple to pray Shiva. While entering the temple Nandhi advised him saying Lord is taking rest, to visit after some Nandi and Ravana had a quarrel once when the latter insulted both Shiva and Nandi. Enraged by the insult, Nandi cursed Ravana that his destruction will be accelerated by an army of monkeys. This curse later supported Rama to slay Ravana.
