The webinar will address the steps Alaska communities are taking to build adaptation and resilience while also responding to a changing climate. Some of the issues to be addressed include: coastal and riverine erosion from storms, storm surges, and flooding; flooding from extreme weather (both high precipitation and glacial melt), wild land fires, ice and wind storms, etc. These techniques are relevant to other parts of the nation facing similar extreme weather events and natural-caused disasters. The webinar will describe how the various powers of local governments may be used to build adaptation and resilience. The importance of the comprehensive plan, zoning and subdivision ordinances will be highlighted. In addition, the important roles of collaboration, diffusion, and informal methods for building climate change adaptation and resilience will be presented. The webinar will then to demonstrate how the various tools may be used by reports from 3-4 Alaska communities that have put these tools into practice. Also to be explored is how these Alaska communities have been able to make climate change adaptation and resilience priorities even though large numbers of their respective communities still doubt the existence of climate change. At the end of the webinar, participants will know the various powers of local governments for building climate change adaptation and resilience and how these powers may be build climate change adaptation and resilience. The importance of the common planning tools: comprehensive plan, zoning and subdivision ordinances will be reaffirmed for participants. Participants will also learn about the how of collaboration, diffusion, and informal methods may assist adaptation and resilience efforts. And finally, participants will be provided information on how these various tools have been put into practice in Alaska communities.
